Vehicle Description

1970 Dodge Charger R/T 440 – Fully Restored, Numbers-Matching, Plum Crazy, SE Package, Rare 1 of 1,452

In the eternal debate over great car design, the second-generation Dodge Charger (1968-70) ranks among the top not only for the era, but for all time. This well-optioned and numbers-matching Plum Crazy ’70 Charger R/T was originally built for the California market and tops the equipment ladder with the SE (Special Edition) package. Fully restored and completed in 2018, the original numbers-matching Magnum 440 V8 has been rebuilt with a roller camshaft and valvetrain, paired with a rebuilt TorqueFlite 727 automatic transmission and 3.55 Sure-Grip rear end. Only 1,452 R/T models were built with the up-level SE package, making this one all the more rare.

Powertrain

  • Original, numbers-matching Magnum 440 four-barrel V8 engine (375 horsepower)
  • Rebuilt with roller-type camshaft and valvetrain – enhances performance and drivability, reduces valve lash maintenance
  • Chrysler heavy-duty TorqueFlite 727 three-speed automatic transmission (rebuilt during restoration)
  • Factory Performance Axle Package with Sure-Grip limited-slip differential and 3.55:1 gears
  • Engine starts easily and settles well into idle after pressing gas pedal once to engage choke

Exterior & Body

  • Full restoration completed in 2018 – body work including rust repair and new panels
  • Now completely rust-free
  • Resprayed in original FC7-code Plum Crazy exterior color – finish in excellent condition with no chips, blemishes or swirl marks
  • Original white vinyl roof restored
  • White R/T tail stripe (replaced original V6W-code white longitudinal stripe)
  • Glass and seals are new (original windows available)
  • Chrome and exterior trim in excellent condition
  • Hood-mounted turn signal repeaters
  • Hidden headlamps and tunneled rear glass

Interior & SE Package Equipment

  • Restored to original condition – black-and-white interior
  • Woodgrain-trimmed console with vacuum gauge (in car when purchased)
  • Light package, three-speed wipers, sport steering wheel
  • Air conditioning (works!)
  • Power windows, power steering, power brakes
  • AM/8-track audio system
  • “Tic-toc-tach” clock/tachometer combo
  • High-back bucket seats
  • Non-original cruise control (likely dealer add-on at time of original sale)
  • SE package options: map pockets on doors, chrome-trimmed pedals

Chassis, Suspension & Brakes

  • All suspension and chassis components replaced or refurbished during restoration
  • All-new brakes and steering components
  • Car drives superbly
  • 15-inch Chrysler Rallye wheels
  • Reproduction Goodyear Polyglas GT F60-15 tires

Rarity & Options

  • Only 1,452 R/T models built with the up-level SE package
  • Originally built for California market
  • Numbers-matching Magnum 440 engine
  • Factory Performance Axle Package with 3.55 Sure-Grip
  • Rare FC7 Plum Crazy factory color

Restored to its original Plum Crazy glory, this 1970 Dodge Charger R/T exudes all of the uncompromising design details from the era when function definitely took a backseat to undeniably sensuous form. The full restoration completed in 2018 addressed all rust and bodywork, resulting in a rust-free, laser-straight body finished in stunning FC7 Plum Crazy with a white vinyl roof and white R/T tail stripe. The numbers-matching Magnum 440 has been rebuilt with a roller camshaft and valvetrain for enhanced performance and reduced maintenance, backed by the rebuilt TorqueFlite 727 automatic transmission and 3.55 Sure-Grip rear end. Inside, the black-and-white interior is as well-equipped as Chargers came in 1970, including woodgrain console with vacuum gauge, A/C (working!), power windows, power steering, power brakes, AM/8-track, tic-toc-tach, high-back buckets, and SE package touches like map pockets and chrome pedals. All suspension and chassis components were replaced or refurbished, with new brakes and steering components, rolling on 15-inch Rallye wheels with reproduction Goodyear Polyglas GT tires. With only 1,452 R/T SE models built, this fully restored, numbers-matching Plum Crazy Charger R/T is a rare and spectacular example of Mopar’s most iconic design.
